PlayStation Will Stop Making Physical Games In 2028

Not even two weeks after Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto VI would not be getting a physical release, PlayStation went and made a similar announcement. But this one doesn’t pertain to any single game, it’s for all of them. Beginning in 2028, PlayStation will no longer produce any physical games for its consoles.

Every new PlayStation game in stores starting in 2028 will just be a code in a box. The era of trading and selling physical PlayStation games has come to an end. But this move also brings up a bunch of questions.

The wording makes it clear it’s going to be every PlayStation game, not just games developed by studios owned by SONY. Other developers and publishers won’t be able to produce physical games either. I find it very unlikely that PlayStation would announce this without already having told the hundreds of studios they work with.

it’s very likely that Rockstar already knew this was going to happen and made the shift to digital in advance. If other studios were told in advance, they may have similar announcements in the coming months.

But also what does this mean for physical games people already owned? Will the PS6 be digital only with no backwards compatibility before physical PS5 games? Will they stop selling physical PS5 models and disc driver early? Lots of questions.
