I rarely watch anime subtitled. I’m usually multitasking while watching because I’m covering and reviewing the stuff that I watch. So subtitles aren’t always a viable option if it’s something I’m going to work on. Tsukimichi: Moonlit Fantasy was one of just six anime that I watched subtitled knowing that I was going to have to rewatch it again for work. That’s how excited I was when the show first came out.
The story follows Makato, who’s summoned to a fantasy world from earth. Unlike other Isekai, his parents were originally from this fantasy world before going to earth. He’s summoned to be a hero, but the Goddess thinks he’s too ugly and casts him aside. He’s forced to fend for himself, but he’s given the ability to speak demihuman language and a few other overpowered abilities.
Demihumans are common in this world, but they’re given the same treatment as Makato. He goes around with literally every demihuman he can find. His goal is to create a better world for the Demihumans while ensuring that he can live a peaceful and comfortable life. Unfortunately, he keeps getting dragged into the shenanigans of the Goddess and other humans.
I’ll be honest, by the end of the first season, there were only two characters that I really liked. All the other characters were merely tolerable to me. But those two characters, the humor, and the story really elevated the show for me. By the end of the first season, Moonlit Fantasy had become a top 20 anime for me. Then I was shocked when the second season came out, and it was even better.
First off, you’ve got Makato. He’s such a great protagonist, and one of my favorites of all time. He’s such an interesting and cool character, and I absolutely love his dry humor. The English voice actor does a great job with the delivery too. Then you have Tomoe, she’s another one that I loved. Her personality is awesome, and I just love her design. There’s also a few interesting characters introtin the second season, like the other humans summoned from earth.
The humor and characters aren’t the only reasons that I love Moonlit Fantasy so much. I love the depth of the story as well. Throughout the first season, there’s a ton of humor and silliness. Then suddenly during the final two episodes, there’s a moment that gets incredibly dark and intense. Then in the second season, there are some political moments and a few themes that are more mature. The show is mostly humor, but I love the world building and the overall story so much.
It’s honestly such a great show. A few of my friends said they didn’t care for it, but I genuinely can’t figure out why. It has a great mix between humor and seriousness, while having lots of great story moments and characters. It’s definitely worth checking out, because you won’t regret it.
