Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be Fry From Futurama? Doesn’t it sound fun to be part of a dysfunctional delivery crew that goes on wacky adventures? That’s pretty much the concept behind Calamity Angels: Special Delivery. It’s a simple RPG about delivering packages in a fantasy setting. Much of the game is the bare minimum, but it’s delightfully chaotic.

The game takes place in a world where it’s too dangerous for normal people to go out and deliver stuff on their own. It’s up to trained delivery teams to travel the world and deliver letters, packages, and people. It’s dangerous because there’s all sorts of enemies and monsters, including some that feed off the emotions of the package. You play as the newly hired leader of one of these teams.

The gameplay loop is broken into two parts, exploration and combat. Exploration takes place on a giant game board, and you travel across dozens of tiles by spinning a wheel. Your goal is to reach the delivery destination, and each tile represents things like battles, story events, and random chance events.

You have the freedom to explore as much of the board as you like, but you’re limited to how many turns you can take. But even if you roll all ones, you’ll never run out because you get turns back from battles and random chance spaces. The only problem with the board game side is that it’s all luck based. The wheel and the chance events are all random, there’s nothing exciting here outside of battles and story events.

The battles are rather simple as well. It uses standard turn based RPG mechanics and you lead your party members to victory using a variety of attacks, skills, and items. The one unique aspect is that the mood of the party members can affect whether they listen to you or do something else. This also requires some luck and if they don’t listen to you, which happens a lot, it can get infuriating. There’s not that much excitement with the gameplay, it’s exactly middle of the road.

But for me, all the excitement came from the story and characters. The team that you’re taking charge of includes a mage who would rather punch people than use magic, a healer who’s too greedy for her own good, and someone who would rather sleep than exist. They earn the nickname Calamity Angels because they bring chaos wherever they go and all their previous leaders quit.

I love their antics and personalities. The core party is hilarious and immediately made me think of Kazuma’s party from Konosuba. All the other characters you meet throughout the game fit the chaotic experience too, and they’re all voiced in English. I already said that the gameplay is mid, but the characters, humor, sound design, and visuals earned a lot of extra credit for me.

Is Calamity Angels: Special Delivery worth picking up? You might find the gameplay to be way too easy at times, but the game has a lot of charm. For $30, it’s pretty good since you can get between 15 and 20 hours out of it. You might also enjoy it a lot more if you think of it as less of a regular game and more of an interactive anime.
