Umamusume: Pretty Derby Guides

If you’ve spent any time in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you’ve probably noticed that stats are basically everything. Every training session and every race result usually comes back to how your stats are built. But the game doesn’t always do a great job of explaining what each stat actually does in practice. Hell, I probably spent a month not even paying attention to Guts and Wit. But understanding stats is one of the biggest steps between randomly training characters and actually building consistent winners.

The most important stat for most players is Speed because it directly affects how fast your trainee runs during races. Compare your character to a car, and speed would basically be the same as top speed. In most builds, Speed is your primary focus because no matter how strong your other stats are, you won’t win races if you can’t keep up with the competition. This is why many players prioritize Speed training above everything else, especially in early and mid-game builds. But that doesn’t mean you can’t focus on the other stats.

Next is Stamina. Stamina determines how long your trainee can maintain their pace without slowing down. You need a lot of stamina for longer races or else your trainee will start slowing down in the final leg. Then other characters can pass you. In medium and long-distance races, Stamina is just as important as speed.

Power is like Stamina, but in reverse. If we go back to the car comparison, this is the acceleration. A high power stat means your trainee is reaching their top speed sooner. Power isn’t truly useful in medium and long-distance races because you have more time to build up to your top speed. If you have a lot of power in a long race, you can take a lead at the start, but then you’ll falter later on if you put more emphasis on power than stamina. Power is very important for Sprint and Mile races because you need to take the lead immediately.

Guts is a bit more subtle. It mainly helps in the final stretch of races, improving your trainee’s ability to hold position or make late comebacks. While it’s not always a priority stat for beginners, it can make a difference in close races where every small boost matters. Can be useful in longer races, but speed and stamina take priority.

I personally believe that Wit is the most important stat, and it’s one of the most underrated stats. It improves skill activation rates, race positioning, and overall consistency during races. If you do a lot of optional races to get a bunch of extra skill points and work on building Wit, the extra skill activations will go a long way. This is especially useful if you’re doing long races and have multiple stamina skills.

For beginners, the safest approach is usually prioritizing Speed first, then adjusting the rest based on race type. Sprint builds lean heavily into Speed and Power, while longer races require a mix of Speed, Stamina, and Wisdom to stay competitive
