Back in 2021, I was in the mood to watch some Isekai anime, so I found a list of the best ones. One of the ones that stuck out was Konosuba, so I have it a chance. By the time I finished the first season, it was already one of my top 10 anime of all time and one of my top 3 isekai. It took like three episodes to understand why so many people love it. It’s ridiculous, chaotic, and unlike anything else I’ve watched in the genre. But that’s because it never tries to take itself seriously.
The story follows Kazuma, a teenager who dies in a pretty embarrassing way and is given the opportunity to be reborn in a fantasy world. Before he leaves, he’s allowed to bring one thing with him and ends up taking the goddess Aqua. I love their chemistry and the dynamic between them. After the first episode, she doesn’t seem too bothered by the situation anymore, but she’s lazy and useless. Then you have Megumin, who only knows one spell and can only use it once per day. Lastly there’s Darkness, who loves pain.
Their level of dysfunction is only rivaled by The Simpsons. Neither of them actually pull their own weight and they all get into ridiculous situations while not actually wanting to solve them. Aqua constantly creates more problems and Darkness just creates weird situations. Megumin is the most normal one of them all because her only quirks are her hyper fixation on one spell and her Chūnibyō, but she’s just as chaotic.
The core party is lead by four great characters, but the show doesn’t end there because there’s MANY other great characters. For instance, my favorite character is actually Chris because of how cool she is. Then you have characters like Wiz, Vanir, Yunyun, and even Dust, who are all interesting characters. What makes watching them so much fun is that they’re all idiots except for maybe Chris and Vanir. But despite how chaoticnand useless everyone is, their personalities are all great and they make every moment fun.
Konosuba may not have the emotional storytelling of some other fantasy anime, but it doesn’t need to. Like I said earlier, it doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and that’s why it works. The show, and the light novel by default, know what it’s good at and takes advantage of it. If you’re looking for a fantasy series that can make you smile from beginning to end, Konosuba is an easy recommendation.
