The way I see it, Oguri Cap is the poster girl for Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Right before the global version a year ago, everyone was talking about her nonstop. She was one of the most popular fictional characters in the world for a few months, and it was mainly because her anime was incredibly popular. I would have never tried the game if I hadn’t seen thousands of people talking about her every day, and I bet others feel the same way.
But she’s not just a popular character, she’s one of the best units in the game too. She’s incredibly versatile and one of the best options for new and returning players. You can build a different Oguri Cap every career and end up with five different variants that are each good for a different kind of race. But with that much variety, how do you go around building her? Here’s everything you need to know.
The first thing you should know is that she has very high aptitudes in many categories. For race lengths, she has an A for Mile and Medium, and a B for long. She’s one of the rare trainees that’s natively good in three race lengths. She also has an A on Turf tracks and a B on Dirt tracks, which is just as rare. You can slot her into virtually any race with her little effort.
If you play your inheritances right and build solid parents, you can raise any of those aptitudes to an S. You can still run her by herself or with bad parents and still do well, but tailoring her towards a specific race type using parents can turn her into a powerhouse before the career even begins. You can read a full guide on how to farm sparks and making good parents here.
Once a career starts and you’ve gotten your inheritances, you just need to focus on stats and skills. The easiest race type to build Oguri for will be Mile races on Turf tracks. You just need to focus on lots of speed and power, and put a tiny bit of effort into stamina. With these shorter races, you need lots of power, and you need a few good acceleration skills also. Ideally you’ll grab two skills that relate to power and maybe one or two green skills depends on what kind of races you plan on doing.
To build her for medium races, you’ll basically follow the same strategy. Except this time, you want to focus on more stamina. You’ll want the same amount of speed, but focus on swapping out some power for stamina because you don’t want her boosting to the front of the pack early and then falling apart. But you’ll still need a good amount of power to cover any gaps towards the end of the race.
If you’re building her for long races, you’ll want to go all in on speed and stamina. You’ll need lots of stamina so she doesn’t tire out quickly, and you’ll want a few good stamina skills to go along with those stats. You can see some of the best skills for long races here. You’ll also want a decent but of power to get a good position at the start and to push near the end of a race, and some Wit so that those skills can activate.
Lastly, Oguri Cap has an A in both Pace Chaser and Late Surger. You can benefit from using Pace Chaser in all three race types, but you can also use Late Surger in long races. Follow this guide and you’ll have multiple solid variants of Oguri Cap in no time.
