Last year I played a game called Star Overdrive. It was like Tony Hawk Pro Skater but as a space adventure. Then this year, I played Seafrog, a game about a skateboarding frog. I didn’t think I’d find anymore weird skateboarding adjacent games any time soon. But a few months ago, I found a new game called Denshattack. It looked interesting because it was literally about skateboarding trains.
It’s a very unique game where you drive a train down different fixed tracks across Japan. But you’re not just driving any train, you can drift, jump, and do all sorts of tricks. You play as a girl named Emi, who joins the professional sport of Denshattack. This is basically competitive train skateboarding.
While doing this, she gets roped into the notorious plans of a large company that segregated Japan into a bunch of domed cities. These cities are connected by super high speed trains, but that means every town not in the these cities were left basically abandoned. That explains why random people are able to take control of the train tracks, but it doesn’t explain any of the other craziness.
But that doesn’t matter. We’re gonna suspend all our disbelief for the sake of gameplay. Every level, you drive your train down a set track. Some levels have branching paths, but they’re all predetermined. Your two main objectives are to complete the level and to score as many points as possible. Every level will have a bunch of mini objectives as well.
The design and layout of each level is insane too. One moment you’re surrounded by lava, and the next you’re on top of a ferris wheel. Every single level is quirky and physically impossible. But they’re all full of charm and lots of fun. Some levels will feature a boss battle, which brings even more life to your playthrough.
I love the Tony Hawk Pro Skater inspired gameplay, the characters, and the world in general. There’s lots to love, but there’s two small issues that I had with the game. Firstly, the game was kind of hard for me. I fell off the tracks dozens of times because of a jump or weird drift, and I think a difficulty slider that affected max speed would have worked wonders. There’s also an insane lack of customization options. There’s a few trains and decals, but that’s it.
But neither of those will be a big deal for the majority of players. Denshattack is lots of fun and full of interesting quirks. It’s a solid pickup if you like these kinds of games.
