Nearly a decade ago, Square Enix coined the term HD-2D to describe their newest hit Octopath Traveler. It was a bold art style move that seamlessly blended 2D pixel styles with modern HD styles. The usage of the art style has been very successful since then. Square Enix has made multiple games using this style, and they do own the trademark for the term.
